Project Overview

The dating app project aimed to create an intuitive and engaging onboarding experience for users. My role encompassed extensive market and audience research, coordination with stakeholders and cross-functional teams, and contributing to the design and testing of the onboarding process. The primary objective was to streamline the user journey from app installation to active engagement.

Key Contributions

  1. Conducted market and user research to inform design decisions.

  2. Organized and facilitated meetings with stakeholders, UX, and developer teams.

  3. Designed wireframes and sketched initial concepts for the onboarding process.

  4. Led user testing sessions to gather feedback and iterate on designs.

  5. Finalized the prototype for the onboarding experience, ensuring a user-friendly interface.

Discover & Research

In the discovery phase, we focused on understanding the current market landscape and identifying opportunities for differentiation. Our efforts included:

  • Market Reports and Industry Analysis: We conducted comprehensive research to understand the dating app market, identifying trends, user demographics, and potential areas for innovation. This helped us recognize what the market currently needs and how we can stand out.

  • User review and feedback analysis: We conducted 8 user interviews to gather insights on user preferences and experiences. The interviews provided qualitative data, while the survey offered broader quantitative feedback, helping us understand our target audience's expectations and challenges comprehensively.

Key insights gathered from Discover & Research

Complex Onboarding Processes

Users dislike lengthy and confusing onboarding processes, preferring quick and clear setups for better engagement.

Data Security Worries

Users are concerned about the security of their personal data and want more control over its handling.

Limited Search and Personalization

Users expect better search filters and personalized experiences for enhanced usability.

Technical Issues and Spam

App crashes, bugs, fake profiles, and spam frustrate users, affecting their experience negatively.

Narrowing the Scope

Given the limited time frame, we decided to narrow the scope of our project to address the first problem: the complex onboarding process.

Problem Statement

Users are frustrated with lengthy and complicated onboarding processes. We aim to create an intuitive, efficient, and secure onboarding experience to enhance user retention and satisfaction.

Draft Onboarding Process Wireframe

After identifying the problem, we created the first draft of the onboarding process wireframe, informed by insights from market research, competitor analysis, and survey results. We wanted to hear from our potential users firsthand, so we surveyed and got 34 responses.

Selected questions & responses from survey

This version of the wireframe includes the following screens:

  • Language selection

  • Phone number & verification

  • Location enable

  • Allow notification

  • Personal details
(name, birthday, gender, dating style, height)

  • Photo upload

  • Ethnicity

  • Zodiac sign

  • Job title

  • Preferences (kids, smoking, drinking)

  • Education & religion

  • Interests

  • Self-introduction

  • Select prompts

Iterating the Onboarding Process

After developing the initial wireframes, we held several meetings with the development team and stakeholders, followed by user testing sessions. Based on the feedback and technical constraints, we made the following changes:

  1. Removed Language Selection: Focused on an MVP product; can be added later.

  2. Added Third-Party Login: Incorporated third-party login pages for easier user sign-up.

  3. Segmented Onboarding Process: Divided into three sections with title pages for easier navigation.

  4. Additional Questions: Included sexuality, identity, and MBTI questions.

Step one: Login & Verification

  • Users can create a new account with Joopi or choose a third-party login method

  • Phone number verification page

  • Enable location location-sharing page

Step two: Profile setup

  • Including questions about Name, Birthday, Gender, Sexuality, Height, Photos, Prompt

Step three: Profile Customization

Detailed user profile customization options including:

  • Dating Style

  • Ethnicity

  • Zodiac sign

  • MBTI

  • Job & Education

  • Kids

  • Drinking & Smoking

  • Religion

  • Interests

What I learned from this project

  • The most important lesson was the value of effective communication. Engaging with cross-functional teams and stakeholders early on helped us understand constraints and align on goals.

  • Within the UX team, clear communication and constructive feedback were crucial.

  • Additionally, from user interviews and surveys, I learned that direct user feedback is invaluable for shaping design decisions.
